Edom Springs. A farm in transition from continuous grazing to silvopastoral and agroforestry with rotational grazing. Participating in NRCS's Environmental Quality Incentives Program. JMU students measure the 600+planted tree seedlings here every year. There are two experimental projects. One experiment is evaluating the effect of biochar addition on three woody species. The second experiment, lead by master's student, Christina Henriksen is evaluating the effect of ventilated shelters on four tree species.
Valley View Farms.
An award winning farm (Environmental Stewardship Award Program) that utilizes rotational grazing and nutrient management planning and over-seed forages to improve pasture quality and quantity. Participated in the USDA Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). Students are measuring tree carbon, soil carbon, tree diversity, soil microbial communities, and acoustic diversity (soundscapes). on this farm
Holsinger Homeplace Farm (AJ and Buck Holsinger). A
bicentennial family farm that is an example of one of the most successful silvopasture systems in VA where timber and cattle are managed together for profit, wildlife habitat, and resource conservation. Participated in the USDA Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). Students are measuring tree carbon, soil carbon, tree diversity, soil microbial communities, and acoustic diversity (soundscapes). on this farm
Fisher Farm. Pollinator tree planting enrolled in CREP. JMU students measure the 500+planted tree seedlings here every year.
Fairfield (Idumea): Participated in the USDA Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). 50,000 trees planted on an additional parcel. Students are measuring tree carbon, soil carbon, tree diversity, soil microbial communities, and acoustic diversity (soundscapes). on this farm.
